The first 2 days of the New Year were quite hectic. On the first day, we left the house to start our visiting rounds (starting with my grandparents' place, as we traditionally do), at about 8.30am and didn't finish til 11pm! This was followed by our own open house yesterday, with mainly home-cooked food. Today, I may catch up with a friend or two, but for the most part, I think I will rest. I have to be back at work on Monday. poo.
It's interesting where chauvinism can rear its ugly head. Chinese New Year visiting provides a brilliant opportunity to observe people. In the circle of highly successful businessmen and professionals, it was clear that to them, I was my father's daughter and therefore, by reason of my gender, was not worth being spoken to. I was rarely asked my name! In contrast, my brother was brought into conversations, jested with, asked his name and profession, and I was an accessory. It didn't matter to these men that I was a professional, with an education. This was not just the older Chinese men, but their sons as well. I was utterly disgusted.
On the other hand, it was nice to see a few people whom I hadn't seen for a while. I guess that was pretty much the only thing that I was looking forward to this year. I had a surprise visit from Louisa, a friend from school, and her husband Chris. Played a few rounds of blackjack but pretty much broke even. At least I didn't lose any ang pow money! ;)
